Hello, my name is Mathew and I have started this blog to talk about my best buddy, my Congo African Grey Parrot, Jimmy. In this blog I will be discussing the training and care of little Mr. Jimmy and bits of information here and there.
Jimmy is by far the most entertaining and loving bird I have met, but he is still very young and a little bit moody at times. The thing about African Grey's is that they have very strong personalities. Of course, like any other animal they can experience and show us different emotions in the snap of a finger. Happiness, anger, sadness and jealousy are all emotions you'll see from an African Grey on a regular basis.
They tend to be attention seeking birds, they not only seek it, they demand it. I have found that you should only spend so much time giving attention to your parrot though. If you pay too much attention they will become very needy and loud if you are trying to do something else that does not involve them or if you need to just lay down for a little bit. Of course you should try to involve them in as much of your daily activities as you possibly can. Some even like to be in the bathroom with you when you are taking a bath or shower, some will even gladly jump in and join you for a bath of their own.
Another thing about the African Grey's is that they are amazing talkers! Here is where you might want to be careful of what you and others say around them. They can pick up on random conversations, talking on TV and just random sounds from your house. Jimmy is only just over a year old and already he has quite the vocabulary and one of his favorite things is to whistle and do sound effects. Jimmy is constantly learning new things. He just recently learned to say "Jimmy's a redneck!" and "Mat's a monkey!" as well as a monkey's "Oooh oooh oooh oooh!" He tends to whistle quite a lot and use other birds calls that he had learned from the pet store I had bought him in. Unfortunately, he was placed next to a breeding pair of Quaker Parrots and a very loud Myers Parrot so I hear their screeches and calls quite a bit. Especially when he wants attention.
Jimmy is also very friendly with my 80 pound dog Casanova and likes to try and call him over. They used to kiss each other all the time until Jimmy was in a mood one day and nipped the dog's nose. He didn't do any damage to the dog but Casanova ignores Jimmy's calls when Jimmy says "Nova! Come here boy!" and just looks at him.
This is all for this post but if you look at the photo I posted with this post you will see my little Jimmy for yourself. It is a photo that my fiance took of him and that Vogue has published. My beautiful Jimmy was published by Vogue! How exciting right?
Until next time!
